Utah Wonderstone is a welded-vitric tuff (vitric means glassy) of rhyolitic composition. It is a volcanic rock composed predominantly of volcanic glass particles which have been welded or stuck together by heat and compacted by the weight of overlying material. Alteration of the rock by circulating ground water produced the colorful banding. The maroon and yellow-brown colors are due to the presence of iron oxides. *from geology.utah.gov
Leland Blue is a byproduct of the short-lived days of smelting by the Lake Superior Iron Company in Leland, Michigan between 1875 and 1900. The Upper Peninsula Mesabi Iron Ranges supplied the ore and high-grade charcoal made from beech and maple combined with local limestone flux reduced the iron ore to pig iron, creating a unique foundry glass that was often bright blue, purple, or green. Used to fortify the original pier in Leland, it now washes up on the shore as a modern-day treasure.
Pioneer Swirl, a rare form of Leland Blue, is iron smelting slag from the Pioneer Furnace which was located near Negaunee, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Pioneer Swirl is actually 20 years or so older than traditional Leland Blue, and much rarer.
Petoskey stone is a fossilized coral, the state stone of Michigan and is commonly found along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the United States. It was formed by the fossilization of ancient coral, hexagonaria. These corals lived in warm shallow seas that covered Michigan during Devonian time, some 350 million years ago.
